For the past 25 years, MiniLaps has been one of the largest fundraisers at The Little Light House annually. Families of the LLH students will raise money for their child’s year at school. This year, MiniLaps will be held September 25th, 2010 at The Little Light House. Please help our children by making a donation and help them meet their goal! The Little Light House is a non-profit Christian developmental center that serves children with special needs from birth to six years old. With no government funding, they rely 100% on the community for donations to operate. With your donation to MiniLaps, you can help a child reach their maximum potential.
Our little Haven, who is now 6 years old, is so blessed to be returning for one more year to her school, The Little Light House. I’m sure I’ll be tearing up a bit as she runs around the track for the annual fundraiser, MiniLaps for the last time. We as a family are thankful that she is able to benefit from this wonderful, tuition free school for a 4th year in the same class with the same loving, precious teacher, Kari Tanis. Ms. Kari has made a beautiful impact on Haven’s life. The love, patience and instruction given to our little girl have amazed us and I know these important elements have created an atmosphere where Haven desires to learn and develop. She loves going to school and over break always asks to return. This is pretty noteworthy considering that Haven has autism and she has struggled to want to do much outside of her own mysterious world.
We’ve seen so many positive changes in Haven during these last 3 years and we owe everyone who works with her at The Little Light House so much. I was so excited at the end of the last school year when Haven started coming up to me and telling me the 1st letter to some of her favorite words or subjects. She would say, “Hot water heater starts with H.”…and…”Spider web starts with S.” We hear about hot water heaters and Spider webs quite often. Haven has opened up more and more to everyone around her, she has so much more eye contact, her musical talents have flourished and she has just now in the past year started to display a great ability in sign language. Haven loves it. She sings as well as speaks using corresponding sign language with about 95% accuracy. I love the fact that Haven has been able to observe Ms. Kari’s signing on a daily basis and I feel that this has just given our little girl one more fun reason to learn and communicate with others.
The Little Light House is a treasure to our family, to so many other families, and to the community, and we want to do our part in helping this beautiful organization carry on with the wonderful work that they do. The Little Light House does not take any money from the government, which gives them the freedom to use the curriculum of their choice. This also allows them to provide for these special needs children the way they decide is most beneficial. I completely respect this decision the Founders made so many years ago at the start of The Little Light House and I know that we as a community have the ability to give and support their service. I recently learned that Haven’s schooling costs The Little Light House $17,000.00 per year. This is what they are providing for every child who attends. I also learned that in this down economy it’s been a bigger challenge to raise the funding necessary. In celebration of Haven making her final circle around the track for MiniLaps, I want to ask anyone who may feel a tug on their heart or connection to this wonderful place and important work, to give in Haven’s name to TLLH and see the circle of giving come back to you. Thank you so much for your support.
