For the past 25 years, MiniLaps has been one of the largest fundraisers at The Little Light House annually. Families of the LLH students will raise money for their child’s year at school. This year, MiniLaps will be held September 25th, 2010 at The Little Light House. Please help our children by making a donation and help them meet their goal! We are not only happy, but very blessed to be a part of Mini-Laps this year! You may remember us mentioning that last school year would be his last year at the Little Light House. Well, we received news late in the year that the school would accept Keith back for one more year under the recommendation of his teacher and other staff members. It is a critical time for Keith as he learns how to use his new computer to communicate and participate in his education. We all agreed that the Little Light House was the best place for him to be to gain the confidence, and independence he needs to be able to move on to public school. Keith is absolutely going to flourish as he rises to new challenges in his spelling and reading skills, and many more skills that will help him transition.

It has been an amazing last nine months watching Keith learn to make complete sentences and participate in conversations with appropriate questions and answers, and I have to say he is quite the perfectionist. Plus, it has been heartwarming for our son to have a voice, he can finally tell us that he loves us in his little computer voice, but it’s that voice that we’ve grown to love, it’s Keith’s voice. We’ve learned so much about him as a person. For instance, the fact that even though he has never really had the opportunity to use his manners through language, it was “Please” and “Thank You” right off the bat, how polite! He has a great sense of humor and really gets tickled at silly comments he makes. He absolutely loves Jesus, and it shows in his spirit.

We are also looking forward to a great year as Keith begins some new treatments and therapies to help him advance in motor function, and independence. He will also be getting a powered wheelchair to motor around more independently, as his accuracy in nearly impeccable. He has practiced for hours on end on an ever changing, super fun obstacle course in the back yard with construction cones and stop signs. He even pulls his wagon as a trailer and acts like a delivery driver, grinning the whole way!

In fact, Keith has gotten so good at driving a powered wheelchair that he plans to use it to go around the track this year at Mini-Laps, which is September 25th at 10:00 at the Little Light House. The theme is “Down on the Farm” and Keith has special plans for his float….but we don’t want to give it away so you’ll have to come cheer him on to see! It will absolutely warm your heart to see Keith shine, and celebrate all he has accomplished. He is looking for sponsorship to help him raise money as he makes his lap around the track. With no government or United Way funding they rely 100% on the community for donations to operate. Keith needs you, and the Little Light House needs you more now than ever. It is time to dig deep, talk to your friends, co-workers, and church members and be a part of this amazing schools successful future.

To help Keith out click the “Donate Now’ button and make your tax-deductible donation.
