For the past 25 years, MiniLaps has been one of the largest fundraisers at The Little Light House annually. Families of the LLH students will raise money for their child’s year at school. This year, MiniLaps will be held September 25th, 2010 at The Little Light House. Please help our children by making a donation and help them meet their goal! We used IVF to conceive our first child, Jamison. So it was wonderful news when we found out we were pregnant naturally with our second child, Griffin. Griffin was born by emergency c-sxn as I had placental abruption. He was under oxygen for 7 hrs but then was able to come home with us. Very happy baby, loved to swing for hours (should have been my first clue). Our 1st, Jamison, had been so colicky (almost 6 months of colic) that Griffin's happy demeanor was such a blessing. At a week old, he stopped breathing for 10 seconds at a time - though turns out that is considered "normal". Was put on a 24 hr apnea monitor for a month but everything turned out fine.

Started talking at 7 months, then quit. Was a great eater but at 14 months became "very" selective in his foods. Both times were told things were normal. Started getting ear infections, URIs, etc. and had tubes and adenoids out at 17 months. However, hearing was fine. In Feb. 2007 at a WIC appt., it was suggested I visit with SoonerStart as Griffin still wasn't talking and had a very severe case of pica - was eating the computer cords while we were talking at the appt. When he wasn't acting out or laying on the floor for hours, he was eating things he shouldn't. Thus started the saga of testing. He was accepted into the SoonerStart program without question as he tested well below normal for his age in all categories save gross motor - he is a great climber, could be a trapeze artist. Then our 2 pediatricians started the testing for autism, sent us to a neurologist to check for seizure activity and then on to a child psychologist. Griffin was "officially" diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum in August of '07.

We are very excited that Griffin is going to be attending the Little Lighthouse this August. They provide a loving, Christian, environment with awesome therapists! Griffin has come a long way since the beginning of his journey but it is far from being over and he couldn't be going to a better place than this! He has been in the FLIP program while waiting to attend and the staff were/are awesome in terms of support, offering ideas, working with Griffin one on one – all of which pave the way to his feeling right at home as he starts his first day there this week. Our milestones to accomplish this year would be potting training, willingly brushing teeth, and riding a bike.

We would love to have you come out and cheer Griffin on as he makes his way around the track during Mini-Laps. If you would like to donate towards this awesome event, please visit the Little Lighthouse website where you can donate online. Please mention Griffin’s name (Griffin Hendricks) when donating as that’s how the school keeps track on which child is being sponsored. If you are not able to donate monetarily but would like to volunteer, please call the school. There are a variety of positions in need - anywhere from administrative, classroom, electrical, repair, plumbing, IT, cleaning, cooking, maintenance, etc.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! Ginger and Todd Hendricks
